The Department of Statistics of Maulana Azad College bears its glorious existence by creating its separate entity as a centre of excellence in education in Statistics over the past two decades. The department came into being before 1980 only with plus-two course under the approval of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. From the academic year 1981-82 it started Pass-Course in Statistics under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta with one full-time teacher only. However, from the year 1983, the teaching strength rose to two. A good number of students of Honours in Economics, Mathematics as well as Physics, who had opted for Statistics at the Pass level, have been benefited to a large extent from this department.

Honours Course in Statistics was initiated in 1996-97 session under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta with two full time teachers only. Though the teachers’ strength marginally increased to four in the successive years, one post is still lying vacant.
