About the Department

 The Economics Department of MAC has all along occupied a prominent place in the college in academic as well as extra-curricular matter. Students are largely academic and each session a number of students go for higher studies in the Universities of the State and outside. The department can boast of a number of ex-students who are successfully serving Govt. administration as WBCS and IAS, as media persons, corporate sector executives and as teachers. A number of ex-teachers of this department were well known for their scholarship and teaching ability. Prof. Tuhinangsu Bhattacharya, Prof. Dhiresh Bhattacharya, Prof. H. N. Ray, Prof. P. N. Ray are some of the renowned ex-teachers who also served the University in later phase. The department shows a very good teacher-student relationship. Students are enthusiastic in participating in seminars in or outside college. We hope that the department will continue to contribute to the society and to higher education in years to come.

Key Features of the Course Offered

Economics Honours is one of the most sought after courses in the University of Calcutta and in Maulana Azad College, Kolkata. Every year the college receives hundreds of applications for admission in Economics Honours course. The Department of Economics of the college is one of the largest social science departments and comprises of a many bright students who excel in their academic and professional careers.

The course structure for Economics Honours is a judicious mixture of theory and quantitative techniques supported by empirical and historical discourses. The students are thoroughly exposed to learning the basic theoretical tools and techniques and as well as learning Quantitative Economics, including Statistics and Econometrics. That Mathematics is a compulsory elective course as part of Economics Honours curriculum gives the students an edge at the competitive level and for pursuing higher studies in Economics and allied disciplines.

Students learn Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Economics, Statistics and Econometrics, International Economics, Public Economics, among others as part of the core papers. Under SEC, the department at present offers course on Data Analysis, which is most sought after paper; however, the students may also opt for Rural Development. As part of the Data Analysis course, the students are being trained in statistical software ‘R’. In the coming semester, the department is ready to impart both Managerial Economics and Research Methodology courses under SEC. As far as DSE courses are concerned, the Department of Economics is ready to offer maximum number of courses from the prescribed list. This means, the students will get chance to study Environmental Economics, Applied Econometrics, Financial Economics, among others.

The majority of the students completing Economics Honours from the institution, with Mathematics as one of the compulsory combination subjects, usually would opt for post graduation in different universities and institutes in the state and as well as outside the state. The overwhelming majority of the students of Economic Honours in the college would opt for Statistics as the other/second elective subject. Therefore, a combination of Economics (Honours)-Mathematics-Statistics serves as a right platform or a prelude for prospective productive future career. Armed with a degree of Economics Honours, with Mathematics and Statistics, students can easily pursue masters in Economics, Financial Economics, Actuarial Economics or can go for different MBA and allied programmes.

The students of the Department of Economics of Maulana Azad College have been admitted in leading universities and institutes in the state and outside the state and some students in the recent past have joined corporate sector and have been working in Analytics in various reputed multinational companies. Also, a section of the students is in the academics and has been pursuing higher studies in Economics; while some are enrolled in Ph.D. and/or M. Phil. programmes within the country and abroad, few students have cleared UGC NET or SET in recent past and are in teaching profession. In recent years, a few students enrolled in B.Ed. programme too, after completing their masters in Economics. A small section of students, after graduation, drops out of academics and in order to enter job market, they usually take preparations for competitive examinations and the course curriculum helps the students in this preparation.
